Summer Picnic - 2006
Two Hot Dogs and a Green Icicle, please! Part concert, part juggling show, part BBQ and part community-wide schmooze fest makes for one heck-of-a good time. This year’s fifth TJE Family Summer Picnic was the biggest and best yet. “What makes the TJE picnic so nice is that people from all over Denver come. Perhaps no other event has such a diverse mix of Denver’s Jews,” commented Scott Friedman. They come for sunshine, kosher bison burgers, a ton of fun for the kids and just to see each other. Almost 300 of them, new friends and old. For an added treat, this year live music was played by David Ross and his rhythm and blues trio from New York. David’s hit single, The Power to Be, was featured on the 2003 double album, Voices for Israel, a Jewish ‘We Are the World’ style compilation to raise money for Israeli victims of terror. (Incidentally, another Denver artist was also featured—Steve Brodsky, who recently played at the TJE Chanukah party.) Masterful and entertaining juggling was provided by the Schomay Show Team, otherwise known as Jeff and his brother Ted Schomay. When he’s not lofting sharp, heavy objects into the air, Jeff can be found at the JCC on Wednesday nights for the JCafe. Be sure to put next year’s picnic on your calendar now, it’s a week or two before school starts in the fall. We’ll get the grill going.
