Medical Ethics Conference - 2006

The Second Annual Conference on Jewish Medical Ethics

Presented by The Jewish Experience Center in conjunction with the Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado and Rose Medical Center, the Second Annual Conference on Jewish Medical Ethics addressed the ethical issues surrounding innovative techniques in organ transplantation. Dr. Fred Rosner delivered the keynote address before an audience of almost 100 doctors, nurses and medical professionals.

Dr. Rosner is the Director of the Department of Medicine at the Queens Hospital Center, Professor of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Visiting Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He has written 36 books and over 800 articles in both medicine and ethics, and is an internationally recognized expert in the field of Jewish bioethics.

Following on the heels of last year’s highly successful conference on the ethical issues arising from stem-cell research, Dr. Rosner’s remarks spanned the gamut of potential concerns involved in organ transplantation, from donor issues to recipient issues, animal organs, financial compensation for organ donation and even issues relating to the ritual status of organ recipients.

Afterwards, follow-up questions were answered by a panel consisting of Dr. Rosner, Dr. Igal Kam, an Israeli surgeon who has been instrumental in advancing transplantation technologies in Denver, Candace Cole Figa, an attorney and professor who regularly deals with the legalities of transplantation issues, and panel coordinator Dr. Jeffry Kashuk, who served as a leading surgeon in trauma care in Israel and recently returned to Denver to practice at Denver Health.

The conference was dedicated by Dr. Kashuk and his sister, Ann Shidler, R.N., in beloved memory of their father, Robert Kashuk, who survived seven miraculous years after a heart transplant and passed away just over a year ago. Several organ donors and recipients were in attendance themselves, to learn more about the Torah’s approach to these important technologies.
