Chanukah Party - 2006

"Can" You See That Menorah?

The Jewish Experience, in conjunction with Shalom Family and the JCC put on a tremendous community Chanukah party for Denver, Sunday Dec. 17th, just days before the ‘Chanukah Blizzard of ‘06’ struck

Hundreds of children made holiday picture frames and scarves for residents of Children’s Hospital and Shalom Park Retirement Home. Nationally recognized Jewish recording artist Steve Brodsky played some of his original Chanukah favorites on guitar and Jeff Schomay entertained everyone with his comical juggling act.

“The kids had a wonderful time. The music, the crafts, the food and all the energy were a great start to the holiday,” said Dani Wynn, part of the volunteer committee who helped make the event. Other committee members were Traci Sidon, Debbie Stark and Corina Zazulia.

The culmination of the party was the construction and lighting of a giant menorah made of canned foods. Fifteen feet wide and eight feet high, the menorah was constructed by Rabbi Leban, with the help of all the children, who lined up during the party and passed the last hundred cans across the room to complete the menorah. Colorado Speaker of the House Andrew Romanoff was honored with the official lighting, and Steve Brodsky led everyone in Maoz Tzur, a traditional Chanukah song. The donated cans from the menorah were given to the local Jewish Food Pantry.

The community Chanukah party was just one of several holiday parties organized by TJE this year, serving a broad spectrum of the community, from children and their parents to young professionals and adults.
